Etchings are prints made by a copper plate acting as a stamp. The artist essentially creates this stamp with his design. Aquatint is a laborious technique applied to the copper plate to provide shading that simulates watercolour shading (hence "aqua" in aqua-tint). This traditional medium was employed by notable artists much as Rembrandt and Goya.
